What is a ‘Custom Web Based Solution’?

In its early days the World Wide Web was used purely like a bulletin board. Technological advances however, have made it possible to run complex applications across the web, just as if they were installed on the user’s machine. Applications built in this way have the advantage of being easily accessible from remote sites. In fact anybody with a working internet connection can, in theory, use such an application. Here at Designweb we specialise in producing custom document and project management software using just this model.

… so if it's on the internet, can other people view it?

No, not if you don't want them to. To access one of our web based programmes users have to log in with a User Name and Password, just as if they were logging onto a windows network. The security model we use is based upon that used by UK banks for their online operations, and has proved extremely robust. To date we have handled large quantities of sensitive financial and commercial information without incident.

How long does it take to create the solution?

The length of time it takes to create a web based solution is dependant upon its complexity. In the past, projects have run from a few days to a few months. Our software is designed to be easily configurable, and hence most users should find project times to be short.

… and who will maintain it?

Here at Designweb we have a commitment to software quality, and use industry standard development techniques. Should a problem become apparent while the software is in use we will undertake to remedy it as quickly as possible. In the past we have developed mission critical applications in both the petrochemical and financial sectors.

Routine administration of the web hosting environment can be undertaken by Designweb using one of our dedicated servers. This is the most hassle free option, and the one preferred by most of our clients. However, if your own IT infrastructure allows, it is perfectly possible to bring such administration in-house.

Isn’t all this expensive?

Designweb believe in providing a costing mechanism that makes it clear to the client what the total cost will be. This can vary depending on your needs. If you choose to have DesignWeb provide hosting and administration services this will be covered by a transparent monthly fee. Unlike most desktop packages Designweb will allow unlimited users to benefit from the solution, without extra cost. We believe that compared to tradition models of software pricing, the internet model provides exception value for money. Designweb software gives any size organisation the ability to afford a web based solution - for any project, of any size.

What equipment and training will I need?

All you will need is access to a standard Internet browser - anyone who's used the Internet or an intranet system before will find the environment familiar. Once the system is set up, you can access it from anywhere in the world, at any time of day or night. There is very little training needed, as all our systems are configured to be as user-friendly and jargon-free as possible. The online help texts provided answers most queries.

What software and hardware do I need to access a web based solution?

All you require is a standard web browser with an Internet connection. Recommended minimum requirements are:

Processor speed - Pentium III or equivalent
System RAM - 128MB
Connection speed - 56kbs per person
Web Browser - Internet Explorer 6.0 or equivalent
